Getting Started With Brick Paving

First of all, mark the outline for the patio that you want to pave in brick. Once that is final, follow these steps to start the process:

Prepare the Base

To market the territory, set stakes at all four corners. Now start excavating the area. You will have to go as deep as 8 inches. After that, spread gravel over the place. Rake and tamp it down for leveling the surface. Feel free to use a power tamper for that.

Install the Edges

Measure the area and cut plastic paver edging of the same size. You will have to install it for securing pavers. The edging must be laid along the patio’s border. To secure the edging, hammer 12 inches spikes into the ground.

Sprinkle Sand

The next step is to add sand on the inside of the edging to about 1-inch depth. Spread it evenly by using a rake. Then, smoothen out and level the surface. If your sand is damp, spread it out to dry before using.

Lay the Pavers

Now comes the part that requires extra care – laying the pavers. It is recommended to start edging the border first with a perpendicular line. Make sure the stones stick together tightly. Add another row aligning the first one. Keep laying stones until one section is complete. Use a rubber mallet when necessary for tapping the paver in place.

Cut the Brick to Fit Irregular Spaces

If there are any irregular spaces, cut the bricks to fit the space, but don’t damage them in the process. Mark it by using a pen to be sure you cut exactly the right size. To cut the brick, use a masonry saw. Make sure you wear rubber gloves and safety glasses before cutting. Use a brick hammer to chip the edges of the brick for natural blend in.

Fill the Joints

Once the bricks are in place, pour sand over the entire patio. A thin layer would do it. Spray the patio with water to make the sand settle down into the joints. You might have to repeat this until the gaps are completely filled. Once you are done, run a tamper over the patio for settling the bricks. The sand will be soft when it’s wet but it will harden as it starts drying. This will prevent weeds from growing in the gaps. You can do this over a day or two.

Landscape for Final Touches

The last step is to landscape the patio. You can add a stone path and a few steps and plant some flowers. To create a striking entrance, you can also plant an ornamental tree at the front of the patio.
